Recently the Banarasi Vastra Udyog Sangh (BVUS) dispatched a letter to the Union Finance Minister and the Union Industry Minister, highlighting the plight of the silk industry in Varanasi in particular and India as a whole. They particularly dwelt on the customs duty and anti-dumping duty imposed on imports of raw silk and silk fabrics in to the country, which they consider as arbitrary. They have termed the duty structure on imports of raw silk and silk fabrics as an inverted duty structure.

Shirley Technologies has launched a new a service for textile companies to test for substances of very high concern (SVHC) n garments, fabric, sewing thread, accessories and any other component in the supply chain. The service is in response to new EU laws on chemicals and their safe use and is known as REACH because it deals with the registration, evaluation, authorisation and restriction of chemicals. “For EU-based companies it is their responsibility to ensure any textile products including chemicals used in manufacture, whether they have been produced outside or within the EU, have been evaluated to ensure they are REACH compliant,” said Asif Shah of Manchester-based Shirley Technologies.

The Banaras Brocades and Sarees known for their intricate designs have now been protected under Geographical Indication Act 1999 of India facilitated by the Textiles Committee, a statutory body under the Ministry of Textiles. Shri Pradeep Gupta, Secretary, Textiles Committee has informed that the much needed GI registration will safeguard the interest of the artisans of the Banaras Brocades and Sarees against infringement and hence protect the livelihood of about 2.50 lakh weavers associated with these exquisite handloom products.

The Secretary General of the Indonesian Textile Association (API), Mr Ernovian G Ismy, said that, demand for textiles and clothing in the domestic markets has risen by 15-20 percent. He said, demand in domestic markets for textiles and articles of textiles has reached US$5.4 billion and the decline in demand for imported textiles is apparent in markets of Tanah Abang. On back of demand for locally manufactured textiles and clothing demand for imported products has dropped from 20 percent to 10-12 percent, which brings good tidings for the sector, he said.

The ICAC Secretariat estimates that more than half of world cotton area was planted to biotech varieties in 2009/10, and the benefits of biotech traits in cotton are spreading to more countries and growers. A three-day Handicraft Fair in Jaipur had been organized by the Federation of Rajasthan Handicraft Exporters (FRHE), in order to tap the domestic market by providing platform to the sellers and buyers of handicrafts. Top-notch quality items like blue pottery, ceramics, clay items, traditional furnishing items, textiles, jewelry and furniture artifacts had been displayed by about 100 exhibitors at the exhibition.

Rajasthan handicraft sector shifts focus to domestic market

Export of handicraft items of East Java slipped down to US$ 37.67 million from $39.2 million on account of global financial crisis, revealed an official. This financial situation also has taken its toll on a few of the countries, to which East Java exports its handicrafts, said an officer from East Java’s trade and Industry Office. As a preventive measure, the agency is trying to promote handicraft products from all regions of East Java through routine exhibitions, expecting further plunge in exports.
