It was absolutley mindblowing to see, how things were proceeded straightforward, easy and thanks to an organization very quickly!! What took many hours or even several days to get done around Egypt took here only 1,5 hrs to fill a huge Ocean-Ferry with hundreds of people and dozens of trucks and cars – and to depart just in time!! Arrival to Piraeus next to Athens early in the morning

Jump to the full entry & travel map Irkutsk, Irkutsk, Russia After an hour and half stuck in Moscow rush hour traffic we finally reached ‘Yaroslavsky’ train station, our driver kindly took us to our platform which was good of him as we would never have found it! The train was in, Anna (who shared a taxi with us from the hostel) went to find her carriage whilst I ran to the shop for emergency supplies of beer and pot noodles. We boarded the train and found our compartment, the heat on the train was intense (we found out later that there was a problem with the electrics and they could not turn the heaters off!!) so after I’d finished storing the bags up top I was drenched! So we took our seats and found ourselves face to face with a Russian woman and her daughter.

First of all, we’re having some trouble finding anywhere to upload our photos in China so for the moment you’ll have to make do with the unillustrated version I’m afraid! We stayed around Guilin for the day before catching our bus to Yangshuo. Went off walking with our map and found our way to Elephant Hill Scenic Park. The walk took about 30 mins and we had a nice little look around the city while we were at it.

Our plan today was just to head across the border and get to Otavalo in Ecuador by sunset, we were just 2.5km from the border crossing. First, however, we wanted to look at the market in Ipiales, and off we went, having packed our bags and left them at the hotel.

It was a bit like going from Beijing to Xian – it was REAL India and such an amazing experience!! The roads/driving is ten times worse than China and we nearly got into a few different accidents, although Steve’s driver is amazing and has reflexes like you’ve never seen – we saw a few different accidents happen though. The worst one we came up behind – a car had hit a couple on a motorbike going like 80mph.

But, did we get to see some side streets! Very narrow side streets – they build the houses here tall but they are also very narrow.

This morning we got up a little after 5 am in order to make it over to Lenin Park (marked by a giant statue of the former Soviet leader) where many Hanoi Vietnamese congregate in order to exercise. Though we read about this spectacle in our guide book, we were pleasantly impressed by the amount of men and women (mostly elderly and middle-aged) engaged in activities such as badminton, old school calisthenics stretching, tai chi aerobics, long range hackey sac, walking, and light jogging! Needless to say, we were intrigued by such a wonderfully socialist and social event! We did laps around Lenin Park taking in the view and witnessing Hanoi waking up. While running we couldn’t help but think that some of these men and women who looked around 60 could have actually been soldiers during what the Vietnamese obviously call the “American War.” And some of the Vietnamese who are in their 30s and 40s could easily be children of American soldiers.
