I could (and sometimes do) spend hours browsing through patterns and fabrics online.  I would do it in person if I had the time.  I recently found some patterns by Romeo and Mae that I fell head over heels for.  What’s a girl to do when she falls head over heels for a pattern but buy it?  (How materialistic does that sound? yikes!) I purchased the Milla Modern Pinafor pattern and haven’t looked back.  I made three dresses in one weekend and another dress this past weekend but couldn’t get the pictures because I had this huge ordeal with trying to get the snaps on.  The short version of the story is that I finally had a coupon for Joann’s so I bit the bullet and bought a real pair of snap pliers.  It was the best decision I made since buying this pattern.

As the two front runners in the competition for hosting the 2016 Summer Olympics, Rio de Janeiro and Chicago seemed to be neck-and-neck up until the results were announced. Not only is this terrific news for Brazilian athletes and sports spectators, but it is very welcome news to Brazilian businesses which will be able to showcase their economic successes over recent years.

I have come to a realization, which is:  It has been a long time since we did an antiques show for the first time.  A long time since we were the “newbies” at a venue — we’ve been doing the same shows for years!  But next week we will be setting up at The Albany Show at St. Sophia’s for the first time.  We’re excited. This show has a fine, long-standing reputation but is in need of an overhaul.  Our partner in Warren Street Antiques , Tom Jardas, has taken over management and promotion of the event and is working hard to take a good show and make it better.  (That’s why he asked us to come — haha, just kidding.) I am busy trying to decide what to bring.  We love carrying such an eclectic mix of merchandise, but it does make it challenging sometimes to decide which facets of Tandem Antiques to include in a display.  In other words, we have a hard time editing

by Kevin Freitas and David Fobes Sitôt is an adverb in French that is generally used to designate a moment in time that has just passed — sitôt après – immediately after — or something that is about to happen as in the expression no sooner said than done . It implies a certain (physical) movement or action (trajectory) to be taken, a firm commitment that lies somewhere between the knowledge of the past and the unknown of the future. In other words, there’s no better time than the present.

Today, we have a real problem in the world as countries start to nationalize business assets. We are not so innocent in the US as we might believe; as in Auto, Healthcare, Banking, Insurance Industries for instance. Still, the real issues, which are even more serious are those in the Latin American countries such as; Ecuador, Bolivia, Venezuela, and who knows what other surprises are on the horizon.

Charles Rennie Mackintosh Orange and Purple Spirals textile design Charles Rennie Mackintosh will probably always be associated with the Art Nouveau rose motif that he used on a number of occasions within the textile and interior decoration framework. However, there is much more to his design work than a stylised rose. This can be seen particularly within his later textile design work, much of which was produced between the years of the First World War and just after.

The Christmas rush is upon us already! This is going to be a short post, just to get out some of the newer things that will be on the website soon. Above a pretty blue aquamarine bracelet that features matte lampwork beads in soft blue and khaki and a second strand of sterling chain with 3 little charms. Below, a long aquamarine necklace that drops just at or below the bustline (depending on where yours is!) The next jewelry piece is a thin silver bangle bracelet that has faceted rondelles of tourmaline at intervals.

We arrived to Airlie Beach at 5am and sat in McDonalds for an hour before we could check into our hostel at 6am. After checking in we took advantage of the early cool weather and went for a walk around the town

Next on the agenda was the Nanjing Museum and a pretty unspectacular concrete bridge! The city itself wasn’t that amazing but there was an area called Confucius Temple which was a pretty decent shopping area that was incredibly well lit in the evening.

Trends come and go in jewelry , but pearls are one of those materials that stay popular, no matter the season or what else is happening in fashion. That doesn’t mean that jewelry designers aren’t coming up with unique ways to use these lovely natural semi-precious gems! Elyria Sterling is one of those design houses that keeps pearl jewelry fresh, modern and very wearable.  They’ve paired baroque fresh-water pearls and sterling with conflict-free white sapphires in their latest “ Temple Street ” collection

Incorporating environmentally-friendly habits and products into your life is extremely popular, so it seems that you find buzzwords like “ natural ” and “ organic ” used in advertising campaigns for every product imaginable.  I like to think that I live a fairly green life, so I have to admit that I am definitely attracted to new products that have packaging and descriptions that appeal to my desire to be closer to nature.  Am I being fooled when I buy these products? I recently read an article by Adria Vasil, author of Ecoholic: Your Guide to the Most Environmentally Friendly Information, Products and Services with tips about how to determine whether products you are buying are anywhere close to nature.  The average woman puts 125 chemicals on her scalp, body, face, and lips each day!  Everyone’s interpretation of “natural” is different so you are obviously the ultimate judge of whether or not a product lives up to your requirements, but here are some of Vasil’s quick tips when shopping for a green product: Read the ingredients.

Along with trying to figure out fabrics and furniture for the Bay House , my mom has been hard at work settling their “house house”.  They moved from the Midwest back to their Virginia roots a little over 2 years ago, downsizing from a big, room-filled house to a generously sized but much smaller and more open townhouse.  In going to a smaller house with fewer living spaces, they’ve faced real problems trying to fit their furniture and arrange it in a comfortable, entertaining-friendly way! But they’re making great progress!  I thought I’d share a few recent pics and show what I think is a fabulous way to showcase big windows!  (Go Mom!) The townhouse’s main floor has a kitchen and breakfast area at the rear (with a sliding door going to a brick patio), and then a big open room for dining, entertaining, and a little “study” anteroom.  Here’s the front corner of the main living area: one corner of the main living space Aren’t those big windows great?!  There’s another HUGE window to the right where you see that panel.  And there’s great-great-great-great-great grandpa on the wall, with a neat antique bench below (recovered in a pretty paisley velvet).

The walls are Benjamin Moore’s Monroe Bisque, the same color I have in my house’s hallways and stairwells.  It’s a great warm neutral, which looks totally different in different lights.  It works really well in this space that is so full of windows. pretty vignette Here’s a close-up of a the vignette on the drop leaf table in the first pic.  She flanked an inexpensive wood box (TJ Maxx maybe?!) with a pair of Early American Pressed Glass celery vases (similar to the one she picked up on the Eddie Ross flea market adventure !).   And behind it is a pretty platter from the late 1700s, passed down from my grandmother! a comfy perch Here’s one of the pair of leather chairs flanking the massive front window.  I love the super fluffy down pillow with a cute pastoral scene on the linen fabric.  My mom has done a great job of mixing their antiques (like the tea table) and new items (like the leather chair) in this space!  And see that lamp?  It’s one of a pair of vases that my great-grandmother handmade, which were later made into lamps! You can kind of make out the window seat cushion and some pillows.  Their dog, Izzy, likes to look out the window waiting for people to come home! don't touch! My parents have a lot of antiques – many of them are family pieces, and many have been purchased over the years.  One of the tough things about this townhouse, though, is that there is no “don’t touch or sit on, please” room like their last house where they can put the more fragile items.  I know it’s kind of silly to have a museum room of sorts, but many of these family heirlooms are hands off, like this amazing hand painted table and one of a pair of velvet covered chairs!  They’re so pretty to look at, so it would be a shame to put them in storage, but they somehow need to be protected!  She grouped these together away from the rest of the seating so that people aren’t tempted to sit on the chair or put a drink on the table.

I’ve added another accessory to my list of Must-Haves for Fall: the hooded scarf .  Similar to the snood , the hooded scarf is versatile and stylish.  I am always misplacing hats, scarves, and gloves in the winter so I am so happy to discover accessories that cut down on the amount of items that I need to carry around with me.  The hooded scarf combines the function of the hat and scarf by providing cold weather protection for the top of the head, ears, AND neck with one piece. The look is similar to the silk scarves that you wrap around your head and tie around your neck in the summer with your big movie star sunglasses to protect your face from the sun, but is much more casual and cozy for cold weather.  Here are some affordable and fashionable styles for you to try… Image: Athleta Athleta Cable Hooded Scarf $59 Athleta, the athletic apparel branch of the Old Navy/Gap/Banana/Piperlime conglomerate, has lots of functional and cute merchandise.  This hooded scarf in Dark Grape has a cable knit pattern and a jersey lining for added softness and comfort.
