Jump to the full entry & travel map Queenstown, South Island, New Zealand after leaving papamoa beach we drove down to rotorua. it was really pretty there and we saw a few thermal parks like hells gate and wai-o-tapu where we saw lots of sulphur baths, geysers and hot pools and other fascinating landscapes like yellow and red lakes! we went luging as well which was really fun. you take a cable car up a mountain and go back down in little go-kart like things so we bought a pass to let us go down three times so we did beginner, intermediate and advanced! then we travelled on down to taupo and it was a lovely day so we went to look out over the Huka falls and river and also did a jet boat trip for half an hour of speedy spinning on the beautiful river.

Vesuvius, well… We caught the train (no one around) and then the bus (still no one around, we were the only ones on the bus to the mountain) and then on the way up there we thought, “Mmm its very cloudy, foggy, icy etc” so we get up there, the bus drops us off and leaves, and guess what..

A nice omelette for breakfast, long drive past a large landslide we go straight up past all the queue of traffic, back onto tarmac over the Gyotso La Pass 5220mts to the town of Lhatse & an un-inspiring lunch over the Tso La Pass to Shigatse a major town the second largest in Tibet our hotel a 3 star hotel and I am not impressed, our dinner is a buffet, horrible, my advice is always go out to a restaurant

Jump to the full entry & travel map China, China Day 17 Wednesday 9th Taqing, Lake Manasarova to Paryang. 270km After breakfast in the warm reception, we drive to Lake Manasarova, a little dull but I think that’s the weather, No 1 Land Cruiser has to return to town as its front bumper is hanging off its those terrible corrugations on the road, another border post a long wait to get through presenting our passports. Have lunch beside another Lake, we meet up with No 1 again, more road works and potholes, at last we reach Paryang, what a dump, I have never stayed in such a squalled place no lights, no water I grab a bowel and a thermos of hot water, I also have my bucket just as well the toilets are up stairs as you squat you can look over the local roof tops unbelievable

I think that most people are aware of this by now, but I still mention it as much as possible to really drive the message home.  Always keep the sun in mind when you are outside.  It might be a cloudy day, but you could still be exposing yourself to harmful UV rays.  Please wear sunscreen with SPF 15 or higher or protective clothing

It was absolutley mindblowing to see, how things were proceeded straightforward, easy and thanks to an organization very quickly!! What took many hours or even several days to get done around Egypt took here only 1,5 hrs to fill a huge Ocean-Ferry with hundreds of people and dozens of trucks and cars – and to depart just in time!! Arrival to Piraeus next to Athens early in the morning

The train was in, Anna (who shared a taxi with us from the hostel) went to find her carriage whilst I ran to the shop for emergency supplies of beer and pot noodles. We boarded the train and found our compartment, the heat on the train was intense (we found out later that there was a problem with the electrics and they could not turn the heaters off!!) so after I’d finished storing the bags up top I was drenched! So we took our seats and found ourselves face to face with a Russian woman and her daughter.

First of all, we’re having some trouble finding anywhere to upload our photos in China so for the moment you’ll have to make do with the unillustrated version I’m afraid! We stayed around Guilin for the day before catching our bus to Yangshuo. Went off walking with our map and found our way to Elephant Hill Scenic Park. The walk took about 30 mins and we had a nice little look around the city while we were at it.
