For the artists featured in this exhibit, text is an important element in their work

I couldn’t resist adding a few more photos from the tents at New York Fashion Week . Let’s face it – I couldn’t get away without posting something from Tommy Hilfiger or Isaac Mizrahi’s Spring & Summer 2010 collections ! Isaac Mizrahi sent his models down the runway wearing some heavy-duty clear plastic – bracelets, arm cuffs?  I’m not quite sure what to call them: His luggage had a gorgeous vintage feel to it.  Rich olive greens, caramel leather and creams all showed up, accented with brass hardware

What do you think of this unique “babushka” style hat by Tokyo designer Valeur ?  Again, I am super excited about discovering transformer styles that offer multiple uses for one piece.  This ultra soft handmade lacy knit triangular piece wraps beautifully around the head or can be worn around the neck as a short knit stole.  The “babushka” style is very unique and offers a new idea about modern cold weather hats. Image: Valeur From Tokyo Valeur Lunachi Babushka in Grey $129 at La Garconne Valeur is a designer from Tokyo who creates soft and beautiful handmade hats with unique designs that incorporate ideas of warmth, personal style, and value.  For Fall Valeur has lots of wrapping hats that have the look of a knit headband or scarf but that offer the warmth of a hat.

Just heard from my nephew in Cincinnati letting us know that his precious baby boy did well in surgery.  The doctors were able to put his organs in the correct places.  My nephew and his wife were given only a 50% chance of their baby’s survival during her early months of pregancy. This whole story is a true miracle of what God can do through modern medicine using doctors and parents willing to risk and step out in faith.  The Bible verse that has constantly played in my head these last three week’s is :  “NOTHING is impossible with God”  Luke 1:37 We appreciate your prayer support for this special little guy.

The fair trade movement has led to many unique unconnected, nonetheless, worldwide initiatives that seek to advocate for workers being paid a fair wage. I recently got into a debate with someone that argued that the fair trade movement is really just a marketing ploy that preys on the goodwill of consumers in an effort to increase sales. Importantly, I noted the important work of the Fairtrade Labelling Organizations International (FLO) in Bonn, Germany as a counter to the critic’s points.

As I was still installing the next exhibition in the gallery , I decided to take advantage of the fact that I was not open last Saturday and headed to the University of Toronto Art Centre to catch Fujiwara Takahiro’s artist talk. Fujiwara Takahiro attracted the attention and captured the imagination of thousands with his work Into the Blue exhibited in the Toronto Eaton Centre as one of the Scotia Bank Nuit Blanche Zone A exhibitions in 2008. Fujiwara Takahiro, Into the Blue , 2008 Acrylic polymer, helium Scotiabank Nuit Blanche Zone A Curated by Gordon Hatt Following the amazing audience response to Takahiro’s work last year at Nuit Blanche, and anticipating the installation of his new work Trance Veil for CAFKA which opens in Kitchener this Friday September 18th, I expected to find a packed house for the talk hosted jointly by the University of Toronto Art Centre, CAFKA (Contemporary Art Forum Kitchener & Area), and Gendai Gallery .

The new merch we bought yesterday is everywhere!  This is my life – we go out and fill the van, but then we’re too busy or exhausted to unload it.  Then the next morning Steve has to rush off to the shop in Hudson so anything that isn’t going directly there ends up on the porch, and the dining room table, and the kitchen…its not good.  So that’s where I’m at today. I was on the porch, trying to figure out what to do with that pile, and it occurred to me how much we are drawn to surface.  It doesn’t matter what the thing is – if it has interesting texture, patina, color, paint, rust – we’re in love.   I took some pictures for you, out there on the porch.  It was more fun than actually sorting and moving the merch.  Some of the photos are up close enough that you may not be able to tell what the object is.  I did that on purpose.

The ICAC Secretariat estimates that more than half of world cotton area was planted to biotech varieties in 2009/10, and the benefits of biotech traits in cotton are spreading to more countries and growers. As biotech cotton advances beyond agronomic traits, the current regulatory systems will be updated to meet new demands. Research in Argentina shows that biotech seed fed to livestock does not affect either production of milk or its chemical composition.

Peggy Angus. Ceramic tile design 1950s As part of the Socialist governments rebuilding campaign and restructuring of much of British society after the Second World War, state run schools and colleges took a much higher priority than they did before the war. Many were built throughout the UK during the 1940s, 1950s and 1960s, all were modernist in design and function, and many had areas of decoration that were intrinsically part of the school and college, a number of them designed by some of the leading artists and crafts people of the day.

All of us enjoy things that we experience as we ride around on our motorcycles.  For some it’s the sound of a rumbling V-twin.  Others enjoy the quiet ride of a horizontally opposed engine.  Yet others enjoy the simplicity and ease of  a Vespa so that they can quickly manuever or stop for that perfect photograph.  Personally I enjoy taking in all the scenery and unique sights of this wonderful country of ours.  One of my friends is continually on the lookout for old things.  Things most people have forgotten about.  The old saying of one man’s junk is another man’s treasure comes to mind. Several of us enjoy the beauty and mystery of old barns.  Today I’m going to tell you about a new barn with old things inside.  At first look you might think this barn is just like any other barn.  I hope you soon understand that you truly can’t judge a book by its cover. Everyone knows that if you are going to have a barn then it’s an unwritten law that you must have a tractor.  Well let’s see we have toy tractors, pictures of tractors and advertisements about tractors.  Oh!  I suppose I had better include real tractors.  Here is an old Model G John Deere Tractor.

I don’t have much for you today, because this is my second day fighting off a migraine.  I’m not winning. So instead of whining, I’ll show you a few small updates in my house.  First you’re going to need to tilt your head.  Although my house slants, it’s not this bad.  If it were, I’d roll out of my chair. I’ve finally settled Agnes and Hunter.  If you haven’t met them, please click HERE on the post that caused some controversy over my being pretentious.  I came clean of all my pretentious ways HERE .

Following on the One Dollar Diet Project ‘s footsteps, Amy and Karla of Hope Heals:”Dollar-A-Day Challange” are attempting to eat on a dollar a day for a month in order to raise money for a trip to Africa with Habitat for Humanity. One point raised in the $1 Diet Project’s comments is that a dollar a day buys you more in those very countries where people live on that amount of money or less, countries such as Mexico. I was curious so I took Amy and Karla’s shopping list and compared it to the prices listed on Profeco’s website Quién es quién en los precios (who is who in prices) where they comparison shop a wide list of items.

We had a fantastic dinner last night – a full blown roast followed by my newly patented flat scones. The roast was yummy (I do cook quite a mean roast!) and the scones… well, the scones were flat. So I now call them scone biscuits, and they are really surprisingly nice! As long as I never address them as scones, no-one needs to know they were a fail… Woohoo – the dress has arrived! My 1930’s dress is in fact 1950’s – it has a back zip! However, it is at least Art Deco style, and I am much happier in a skirt that is more 1920’s length than it should! In short, the dress is stunning, needs a little work, and will look close enough to 1930’s fashion once I add the white stole, cute gloves, and some art deco jewellery

Antiquarian Alain, and his wife Claude, Fassier turned an old nineteenth century French girl’s boarding school in Rémalard, a newly chic country town 90 miles southwest of Paris, into a remarkable home and antique shop. When Alain carefully peeled away coats of paint on the second floor landing …  the original celadon green paintwork of the landing, with trompe l’oeil fluted columns and pilasters, came magically back to life… A glass bell displaying a paper-mache algae plant by Farfelus Farfadets, Paris A worktable from an electronics atelier is strewn with 19th century globes, engravings and posters in gouache… Glass cases of haughty winged creatures and shelves burgeoning with books infuse the room with a scholarly atmosphere.

Yesterday evening was spent at Cie’s testing out 1930’s finger waves, drinking pink fizz and generally using any excuse for a good old gossip. You can read her account of the beautiful hosting she did and the see the pictures here . I think with my bob (ish) length hair, I can go for a typically 1930’s do with reasonably little problem! I plan, just for your information, to french plait my hair in the morning to make it wavy throughout, then put finger waves into the front – it worked OK on our first ever attempt yesterday, so I am quite optimistic! Today was a long day, one of those ones that seem to stretch out into the distance and take one hell of a lot of effort to get through
