Sally and I are very excited to finally get the WKD blog up and running!!! It’s taken a bit longer than we’d planned, but we all know that good things take time… We’ll be sharing stories about ourselves, design thoughts, our travels, antique trips, interesting finds, etc. We’ll also talk sometimes about our projects, posting news about our firm and what we’re working on to improve our capabilities and the services we offer to our clients, etc. I’m sure that at times, I will wax philosophical about things that are on my mind, or that have crossed my mind over the course of a week.

It is often thought by many, that wallpaper design is a poor relation not only to textile design, but that of the design industry in general. What is more, many see the proof of its low estimation, in a range of sub-standard patterns from across the decades, that lack both imagination and any standard of technical skill. Despite the fact that many textile designers have also produced design work for the wallpaper industry, the two mediums are different and should be approached as separate projects

Textile design 1851 One of the seminal early influences on nineteenth century design reform, was undoubtedly The Journal of Design and Manufactures. The journal, which was published between 1849 and 1852 by Chapman & Hall, was the brainchild of Henry Cole and Richard Redgrave. The journal was set up primarily as a guide to the formation of a good and comprehensive design strategy that could be formulated and then used throughout the manufacturing, retail and education systems throughout Britain.

I took my camera to the shop yesterday.  I always intend to bring it, but rarely actually remember to do so.  I didn’t do anything fancy, but just walked around with the camera in my hand, and took pictures as items caught my eye – whether it was capturing a whole object, or just a color or surface that appealed.  So the gallery of photos below is not meant to represent the inventory of Warren Street Antiques in Hudson, NY, just give you a little taste.  Trust me, there’s more.  Lots more.

E-commerce is the use of electronic information technology for the business transactions such as displaying catalogs, selling and buying goods and services, processing, payments, etc. It has accelerated the pace and tempo of business, minimized time lag between transactions and reduced inter-mediation. Though the initial cost of creating an infrastructure for E – commerce may appear to be high, in the long run it has proved to be cost effective.

I am sure you, my loyal reader(s), have been anxiously awaiting the return of Tandem Antiques and Design blogging.  Well, the wait is over!  Thanks to some excellent technical help we are back in the photo uploading game.  In all seriousness, I have found a web designer who has repaired my glitches and is currently working on some other improvements to this site.  So far he is terrific to work with, and I am excited about the upcoming changes.  I found him through Twitter – just putting an S.O.S out there and following up on recommendations from my tweeps.  I have to admit, I love Twitter.

Before going into production at a factory overseas, a sample should be made to confirm the quality of the manufacturing, flush out potential problems and to insure the factory understands exactly what needs to be produced. First and foremost, a sample gives a good idea of the quality of the manufacturer’s work and allows the purchaser to weed out low-quality manufacturers before investing significant time and money in them. Any factory that cannot produce a quality sample should immediately be dropped.

Handicraft exporters of Rajasthan, who have been harshly affected by the ongoing economic slowdown, are now focusing on the domestic market in order to survive through the crisis, as this is the market that has remained unaffected by the economic slump. A three-day Handicraft Fair in Jaipur had been organized by the Federation of Rajasthan Handicraft Exporters (FRHE), in order to tap the domestic market by providing platform to the sellers and buyers of handicrafts. Top-notch quality items like blue pottery, ceramics, clay items, traditional furnishing items, textiles, jewelry and furniture artifacts had been displayed by about 100 exhibitors at the exhibition.

Export of handicraft items of East Java slipped down to US$ 37.67 million from $39.2 million on account of global financial crisis, revealed an official. This financial situation also has taken its toll on a few of the countries, to which East Java exports its handicrafts, said an officer from East Java’s trade and Industry Office. As a preventive measure, the agency is trying to promote handicraft products from all regions of East Java through routine exhibitions, expecting further plunge in exports.

The title and theme for the 53rd La Biennale di Venezia is Fare Mondi : Making Worlds . Since its inception in 1895, the Biennale has always had an international focus presenting a forum where artists and curators can celebrate their shared and divergent voices and nations can promote their cultural strength. Much like the World Fairs that served as somewhat of an inspiration and model for the original Biennale, the Giardini became focused around 30 national pavilions.

When a company plans to expand to a foreign market, there are several things to think about – distribution, pricing in the foreign currency and localization of the products, just to name a few. Localization includes not only adaption of the product to the foreign culture, but also translation of all user information and technical documentation. We all know user manuals where the technical translation has been performed by a machine – they are good for a laugh, but usually not suitable to make us familiar with the product, its functions and handling.

The Creation of a Mannequin

Jaipur, India 1986 In the remotest village Anthony ever visited, he stayed in a house that amused him greatly, especially for its kitchen, which was full of holes! He painted various aspects of it, including even a study of just the door which was the house’s most eccentric detail. This door and the surrounding wall were full of cracks so large that a person could easily pass through them into the house….and yet the owners still proudly locked their door at night, shoving great bolts across it, turning keys..and then proceeding to walk right through it! The hole in the roof (in fact half of the roof was missing!) pleased him too , as did the cowpats, which in India are intelligently used for fuel. In any Indian house, from the richest to the poorest, there is always water on the boil , for interminable cups of “char” (very strong tea with vast quantities of sugar)

– Fireweed, a tall, vigorous plant with magenta pink flowers, gets its name from its ability to re-grow quickly in burnt-over areas.  Fireweed is used around the world as a medicinal herb for its anti-inflammatory and anti bacterial properties, and as a tea. Young fireweed leaves and shoots are edible, and fireweed honey is a particular treat for folks with a sweet tooth. – .  Fireweed Oil  on canvas,  5″ x 7″, signed and dated This painting is available for sale.  Inquiries email mavis.penney@gmail.com www.mavispenneystudios.com Visit “Off the Highway” our “100 Days 100 Paintings” blog to see more landscapes from Labrador, Canada and Nebraska, U.S

While I started my curatorial career creating mostly thematic group shows, I have always been most interested in solo or one-person exhibitions. I strongly believe that it takes more than one or two examples of an artists work to really understand the work and get a grasp of what the artist is doing or trying to say. A well curated or developed solo show can provide the viewer with a detailed or comprehensive look at a specific body of work, or of a survey of a longer period of artistic production

Italy has a contemporary and efficient freight transport infrastructure, which facilitates an effective system for freight forwarding. Most of the transport infrastructure was built after the Second World War and is continually updated. Most freight forwarding in Italy is carried out by road and there is an excellent road network, especially in the north of the country, which is well utilised by shipping companies and those involved in freight transport.

Dissatisfied staff, increasing job mobility, rising wage demands, lack of talent management strategy – these are real issues currently facing the war of talents in booming economies of the Asian region. Asian workers are more than willing to chase the best jobs and money, hence creating a talent and retention crisis for both local and western employers in the region. Behind the baggage carousel at Venice’s Marco Polo Airport was a large banner for Interior Landscapes an exhibit of the work of Mona Hatoum at the Palazzo Querini Stampalia . I will never forget the experience of seeing Mona Hatoum’s exhibition at the New Museum of Contemporary Art in New York in 1997 and was very excited that not only was I here in Venice for the 53rd Biennale de Venezia, but I would also be able to see the work by one of my favorite artists. I love the simplicity, the beauty, and the ephemeral quality of Hatoum’s work juxtaposed against the quiet, disturbing and often hidden symbolism.

Have you ever noticed that when the space shuttle is landing they often cannot land because of weather at Cape Canaveral, Houston, or in the desert in California? Well, what happens if you are flying in a private space enterprise spacecraft, and the weather in several locations will not let you land. You are going to have to come down eventually and chances are the private spacecraft/aircraft are not going to be large like the space shuttle and they will have limited resources and supplies.

Sounds heavy, doesn’t it?  It is, kind of.  This last week has been weird, because my attention has been focused on this blog, but I haven’t been able to produce anything.  I have come up with a substantial list of posts I want to write — all, of course, heavily dependent on images that I can’t upload until my problems get resolved.  (For those just joining the conversation, I cannot upload any photos to my blog.)   Now that my blog is broken, all I want to do is blog.  Ironic. So I thought “I need to write something without pictures.”  But what?  I have had the urge lately to write more, both the type of content that this blog is built around as well as more personal, life-grappling issues.  I have even journalled a couple of poems in the last week, and I haven’t done that in years.  Just this morning I found myself tweeting (do you love Twitter?  follow me here .) this very philosophical stream about contentment -vs- happiness, and I enjoyed it.  I had more to say.  I wanted to bust out of the 140 and make it a whole blog post
