Criticising India for continuing with laws like the Armed Forces Special Powers Act which it said breaches international human rights standards, the United Nations today asked New Delhi to repeal them and raised the issue of alleged disappearance of people in Kashmir.”India should repeal those dated and colonial-era laws that breach contemporary international human rights standards. These range from laws which provide the security forces with excessive emergency powers, including the Armed Forces Special Powers Act, to laws that criminalise homosexuality,” UN Commissioner for Human Rights Navnetham Pillay said here. She also asked the government to address the cases of alleged disappearances in Kashmir. “In the past two decades, hundreds of cases of disappearances have been reported in Kashmir.

While trying to embalm the bruises and lacerations inflicted on the soul and psyche of the people of Manipur, who were all fire against the draconian Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act, following rape and murder of a woman allegedly by the Indian forces, Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh had recently announced his government’s decision to soon modify the act ostensibly as part of the steps to address the grievances of the people. Dr Singh is reported to have recently told a public rally at Imphal that by modifying existing provisions, or inserting new provisions in AFSPA, it would be made more humane, giving due regards to the protection of basic human and civil rights. It is here in place to mention that this incident had forced the government of India to set up a committee to review the law, which gives sweeping powers to its forces to trample over the human rights with impunity and without ever having any fear of an adverse notice before a judicial forum

The government of India figures that Jammu and Kashmir State has exported handcrafts items worth Rs1500 crores impresses none, with traders, artisans and the business leaders of occupied Jammu and Kashmir accusing government of confusing the issue by mixing up figures. “Now handicraft items are being produced in Amritsar and sold outside the country under Kashmir label. It is only exporters who thrive on the trade, which has proved fatal for Kashmiri artisans in particular and Kashmir in general,” said Abdul Majid, an artisan

Amid anti-government slogans, number of daily wagers from across the state participated in the protest rally that passed through various markets of the city, this afternoon.‘’The administration is not taking care of the daily wagers and not even paying attention to our genuine demands as for the last one-week, we are on strike,’’ Kulbir Singh, one of the leaders of All J&K PDD Daily Wagers Association, Jammu told UNI.He said that government has forced us to come on the streets as they are not serious in handling the issue and not considering our demands.‘’Amendment of SRO 64 of 1994, regularisation of D/Ws, who have completed 7-year in service after 1994, release of wages on monthly basis and enhancement of wages from Rs 70 to 200 per day are some of our demands, which government should immediately consider,’’ he said, adding that the agitation would be intensified, if the authorities fail to consider their long pending demands. The protestors marched towards Civil Secretariat, but police and the security forces did not allow them to proceed.Tehsildar Jammu, however, reached the spot and was handed over a copy of memorandum by the agitating daily wagers, which he said would be forwarded to the concerned authorities.

I absolutely love coloring other artist’s lineart.  I would totally do it for a living if I could.  Usually when I tell people that, they mostly just kinda furrow their brow, or smile politely; probably thinking “Well, anyone over 3 can color”. I heartily disagree, though explaining why can be difficult.  I guess it all comes down to interpreting the lines.  When coloring your own work, you know what colors go where, how shadows fall, and where your light source is located.  When working on someone else’s stuff, these things usually need to be decided via line width, light/dark balance of the inks, or if the lineart is less detailed, much will need to be improvised

Like our home, we want our office to look good. The first thing that comes to our mind when we visit any workplace is that it should look good, leave an impeccable effect on the mind of the customers who visit us or executives who work with us. Before you make any purchases for the office – a wooden table, wooden partitions, or wooden computer table, it is necessary for us to plan the office space wisely

Category: DIY Fashion I went to JoAnns & spent way too much $$ but found some cute prints. I picked up enough to sew 4 dresses: These tops are neat- from JoAnns- you just need to add a bottom! I picked up 3/4 yard of white and the same in black: I started with the white and added polka dot print for the skirt. It’s folded like a bubble skirt

by- Divya A brief tribute… Sipping spicy ginger infused chai on the balcony, mesmerized by the blood red hues of the warm sun rising high above the calm sea…listening to the wild sounds of birds waking at dawn.  Then almost instantly, the calm darkness in Mumbai transforms into a vibrant, pulsing energy known only to those who have walked her streets, shopped her markets or strolled along her waterfront promenades.  Each voice, step and sound blending together in a harmonious vibration that continues to feed India’s ever evolving, ancient and colorful rhythm. Sunrise over Mumbai After a week at my sister’s apartment in Colaba , I was settled into a daily routine that officially began only after my second cup of chai. Soon following would be hours spent adoringly playing with my 9 month old niece, reading the most colorful journalism only the Mumbai Mirror can spin, and determining the lunch and dinner menus of the day.

Category: DIY Fashion When I first came up with my plan to sew this dress , I envisioned red, black, and tan. I cut my fabric and pinned on the skirt- I had the red silky material and sheer black material draping over the tan jersey material. But I decided to only sew the sheer black material on.

Shiebler letter opener with “shalom” engraved in Hebrew Shiebler Pin with the word “Roma” Engraved George Shiebler’s engravers used Roman and Greek related words on their Etruscan pattern flatware, hollowware and jewelry and many people are curious as to the purpose and meaning of the words. After acquiring quite a few pieces and checking around I think I can safely say that the words are meant to look as if they were dug up with the old Roman and Greek pots and pans in an excavation.

I love to read passages that start with “there are two kinds of people in the world…” because of course there never are. But I am still always interested in the way many would divide the world and feel that their choices often reveal a great deal about themselves. So…there are two types of people in the world: those who like great expanses of one colour, with maybe a touch or two of another, the monochromatics, and those who prefer colours many and mixed

Global warming is already leading to widespread disruptions of the Earth’s natural systems, according to a study published in the journal Nature and conducted by some of the climate scientists who were involved in the influential 2007 Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) report. “[This] is the first [study] to formally link observed global changes in physical and biological systems to human-induced climate change, predominantly from increasing greenhouse gases,” said study reviewers Francis Zwiers of Environment Canada and Gabriele Hegerl of the University of Edinburgh, Scotland. The scientists catalogued more than 29,500 reports of changes to the Earth’s natural systems

Valentine’s Day is always a whirl of last-minute gifts – people seeking presents for those they care for and want to remember on the holiday. In this business, I’ve been surprised, pleasantly, I must say, by how many men buy jewelry gifts or make arrangements for them well in advance of holidays whether Valentine’s, Christmas, or a birthday. Strangely enough, it is often women who seem to wait until the last minute and decide that they want an extra stocking stuffer or that they want to get their daughters or daughters-in-law something for Valentine’s Day

Emma will be one on Monday.  EEK! Where did the year go? Anyway, I have been very busy planning a simple birthday party.  HA HA! No seriously.  I have been busy but Emma’s birthday party is not the reason… her dress is! This is a sample of what she is getting…    Her actual birthday dress has blue, red, yellow, and black.  I know, sounds UGLY, but its gonna be cutimous! I promise! I made this one first so I could work with making up my own pattern to fit my lil petite thing.   There is also a white pettiblouse/dress that will go with them.  I just need to figure out how to make it better.  Right now I think I am on my third try.  I eat all my words when I said sewing was easy… Well, sewing IS easy…its the making up patterns that’s difficult!   Saturday we went out of town to gather apples.  I know, with the cost of gas being as it is wouldn’t it be rather expensive to go out of town just to pick some apples?  Well, we don’t do theme parks or fairs or anything like that.  We love the experiance of choosing fresh apples from an orchard.  We love the fresh crisp taste of them and love the picking experiance.  Emma had a wonderful time.  Remember last year? http://sodbusters.wordpress.com/2007/10/07/saturdays-rasberry-tea/ I guess I never did upload those pictures… hmm… Well here is 2 of them.
